Innovative Technology & Equipment

DEXA BONE DENSITY SCAN

Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, or DEXA, uses low-dose X-rays to provide detailed images of your bones, usually the spine, hip, and wrist. This scan measures your bone mineral density and assesses your risk for osteoporosis or fractures. Early detection of low bone density allows for you and your doctor to manage any future risk by making lifestyle changes and starting proactive treatment plans..

3D DIGITAL MAMMO

3D mammography, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis, offers a more advanced and detailed way to look at breast tissue compared to traditional 2D mammograms. By taking multiple images of the breast from different angles, 3D mammography creates a comprehensive 3D picture, allowing our radiologists to examine breast tissue layer by layer. This clearer view helps in detecting breast cancer earlier and more accurately, especially in women with dense breast tissue.

ULTRASOUND

Ultrasound imaging, or sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of structures within the body. This technique is commonly used for monitoring fetal development during pregnancy, examining abdominal and pelvic organs, and assessing blood flow through vessels. Ultrasound is safe, non-invasive, and does not use ionizing radiation. It’s also helpful in guiding minimally invasive procedures, such as needle biopsies, and in diagnosing conditions related to the heart, liver, kidneys, and other organs

I have happily used the South jersey Radiology Haddonfield Office for years. Technicians, including my DEXA technician from yesterday are efficient and answer questions as well as asking them. She did everything possible to make me comfortable including using pillows and a stepstool to support me as I got onto and off the table

Have a Question? We’ve Got the Answer!

Who needs a DEXA scan?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends bone density (DEXA) scans to help prevent fractures and bone loss for: • Women over the age of 65. • Women who are between the ages of 50 to 64 with certain risk factors. • Men over the age of 70. • Men who are between the ages of 50 to 69 with certain risk factors. • Men and women who have a history of fractures after the age of 50.

What are the risk factors of osteoporosis?

Anyone can develop osteoporosis, but women have a higher risk than men, Here are the most common risk factors for osteoporosis:
• Aging
• Alcohol consumption
• Calcium or Vitamin D deficiency
• Certain types of medicines, including glucocorticoids
• Family history
• Lack of exercise
• Low body weight
• Smoking

Why are women at a higher risk for osteoporosis?

Women are more likely to develop osteoporosis than men for a number of reasons:
• Hormonal Changes – Menopause causes a sudden drop in estrogen levels, which can directly affect bone density. Estrogen deficiency can increase bone turnover and resorption.
• Smaller Bones – Usually, women have smaller and lighter bones than men.
• Pregnancy – The minerals in your bones may decrease after undergoing a pregnancy.
• Calcium Needs – Women need more calcium than men to maintain bone density.

How should I prepare for a DEXA scan?

Before your appointment, please follow these guidelines:
• Do not take any calcium supplements, including over-the-counter and prescription, 24 hours before your appointment.
• Avoid wearing clothing that contains metal objects including zippers, jewelry, belts, or buttons.
• Please arrive fifteen minutes prior to your appointment.
